Published June 2025:  USDA Thrifty Food Plan

According to this plan, our family has a budget of $189.30 weekly. Since June has 5 weeks, our monthly budget is $946.50.   We elevate our dining experiences by including fresh fruits, vegetables, and higher-quality meats.  Since our family has specific dietary needs, we limit our consumption of highly processed food.

Grocery Shopping Tip:

  • I have herbs in our garden and will air dry them on a rack throughout the summer instead of purchasing them.    I can dry enough parsley, oregano, sage, thyme, basil, and chives for the year.    However, we use more than these herbs in our cooking.     Therefore, I will shop at international stores to get the best prices and break them down into small containers for use.   This week, I picked up garlic powder, chili flakes, turmeric, and mustard powder.

Here is what we did this week to make our week easier:

  • Broke down chicken and pork into dinner-size portions and froze the packages.

  • Cleaned out the refrigerator and used the older fruit and vegetables first.
