With inflation on the rise and salaries not increasing, our ability to make ends meet is decreasing. Therefore, we must be more careful with our money. The Frugal Five is a series that celebrates the daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.
I am exploring ways to reduce costs during busy weeks. One strategy is to watch the pennies because they add up. Here are some of my tips and tricks.
1- Garden Harvest Preservation
July - August has been busy with harvesting and preserving our garden. I preserved salsa, canned tomatoes, pickled banana peppers, froze green beans, dried tomato skins, and dried many herbs.
2- Our Rich Backyard - Free Tickets to a Red’s Game
My husband’s work provides a set of 4 tickets to the Reds’ game to key employees. We were gifted a set of tickets and attended the game against the Braves. I was able to share two tickets with a colleague. It was a great game and I enjoyed sharing what we had with a friend.
3- Packed Lunches
Ordering out can get very expensive and is typically not a good use of our resources. We purchased various lunch options each week and packed our lunch daily. This saved us at least $5.00 each day.
4- Coffee To Go
Picking up Coffee daily can get quite expensive at about $5.00 a cup. Instead, I choose to purchase good coffee from the grocery store and pack a to-go cup of coffee for myself and my husband daily. After two days, we have paid for the coffee and creamer, and as a bonus, we have some money left over. The coffee and creamer will last us for the whole month.
5- Make Homemade Chicken Stock
I purchased a rotisserie chicken from Costco for $5.00 and picked it clean to make chicken salad for a week’s worth of lunches. Then I used the chicken carcass to make a delicious chicken broth. In addition, I used the stock and some reserved chicken to make chicken tortilla soup.
