The Frugal Five: #30

 The Frugal Five: #30

With inflation on the rise and our salaries not being able to keep up, it seems like we have taken a pay cut and must be more careful with our money.   The Frugal Five is a series where we celebrate our daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.

Last week was a little hard to get anything accomplished, so I needed to give myself grace.   Although I did try to be as frugal as possible, I also needed to keep my life together.

1- Car Pooling

My son has practice everyday and meets on the weekend.   With gas prices and time restraints the way they are, it would be challenging for us to get him to and from practice and school.   Therefore, we carpool with a teammate who lives down the road.  Since the pool is on the way home from work, I really do not have any extra expenses.   However, I do have to stay late every night at work.     I use this time productively, so there is really little downside.

2- Leftovers from Work

My work provided dinner for us because we worked late again this week.    After everyone got all they wanted, there was still a lot of food leftover.    Therefore I was permitted to take the leftovers home.    I took home a half pan of BBQ chicken, Beans, Potato Salad and a Packet of Rolls.     It made for an easy and delicious Friday dinner with leftovers for the freezer.

3- Prepared the Garden for Winter

This week the weather turned very cold and we had frost overnight several times.    It was time to pull off the tomatoes, take the tomato plants out and prepare the beds for winter.   This yielded XX cups of chopped tomatoes for the freezer.

4- Refrigerator Clean Out

I noticed that our refrigerator was very full this Friday, so I really didn’t want to purchase a lot of food this week.    Therefore, I took inventory of my refrigerator and freezer before making my meal plan for the week.    This way I only shopped the sales and our minimal needs for the week.   In addition, I froze items from my refrigerator that may have gone bad by the end of the week.

5- Baking Bread

I made Cinnamon Raisin Bread to enjoy for breakfast this week.   If I were to purchase the equivalent product, it would have cost me between $5.00 and $9.00.    Baking White Bread cost about $0.52 when I created my post in 2019, so I estimate it would not cost more than $1.00 per loaf now.

Since March has 4 weeks, our monthly budget is $757.20.   We elevate our dining experiences by including fresh fruits, vegetables, and higher-quality meats.  Since we have health concerns and are active individuals, we limit our processed food choices.    Grocery Shopping Tip:     Utilize your grocery store’s loyalty program. This month, my 2 primary grocery stores have provided me with store coupons for bread, Silk milk, jelly candy, frozen vegetables, and Bali coconut water.  Here is what we did this week to make our week easier: ...
