The Frugal Five: #31
With inflation on the rise and our salaries not being able to keep up, it seems like we have taken a pay cut and must be more careful with our money. The Frugal Five is a series where we celebrate our daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.
Last week was a little hard to get anything accomplished, so I needed to give myself grace. Although I did try to be as frugal as possible, I also needed to keep my life together.
1- Homemade vs. Prepared Food
I am slowly finding all of my kitchen appliances that are helpful in preparing food for the week. We have been buying prepared hummus since June and it is quite expensive. However, last week I found my Vitamix, so homemade hummus it is this week. Yippie!
2- Planning for the Tough Days this week
By Thursday, I am exhausted and do not want to cook when I get home at 6:45. This week I am accepting this fact and providing grace to myself in the form of having a sandwich night on Thursday.
3- Haircut Savings
Since haircuts are $30 per cut plus tip, each time my husband asks me to cut his hair, I am happy to. This is a huge savings! He gets his hair cut every other week, so on average we save $60 per month on just his hair cuts.
4- Packed Lunch Each Day
Our whole family packs their lunch each day for work or school. By packing lunch, we save between $10 and $15 per meal. I try to add a little treat each day, so that it is special.
5- TV on the Cheap
Several years ago, I cut the cable and couldn’t be happier. We do have an internet cost, but not much else. We picked up a Roku box 4 years ago at a Black Friday Sale and it is still going strong. We are able to get so many channels through our Roku and our TV is digital which allows for more free TV watching opportunities. In addition, we have Amazon Prime because we save more money than it costs to be a member. Prime also provides us with movies and TV shows. Finally, we are able to pick up our local channels through an antenna. Watching TV doesn’t have to be expensive.
