Part of living the Good Life is Experiential in nature-- Getting Out, Experiencing LIfe,
Enjoying Friends and Family, Good Food and Embracing the Arts. We all want to Live The
Good Life, but don’t necessarily have the financial resources to do so. We have big
dreams, a lot of creativity, but little cash, so it’s good that we only need 2 of those things to
Live The Good Life.
Each Sunday, I look at our week’s activities and plan how to get the most out of life within
our budget. Some weeks we add a lot of activities and others we need more low key things
to do or nothing at all. Just relaxing at home can be very welcoming.
This week’s feature topic is Free or Cheap Music.
Throughout history music has moved our souls and inspired us. With a little bit of
knowledge, you can enjoy all different genres of music and it is possible to enjoy the concert
experience for little to no money. Now it is a little easier to find cheap or free music at
certain times of the year, but it is available year round with a little creativity and flexibility you
can find it too.
Let’s take a look at some places where we can experience lovely music at rock bottom
price.
Music Festivals- In my local town, we just finished up a musical festival for the low, low
price of $1.00 per person. Yes- you read it correctly- $1.00 per person. The festival was
held over 2 days with a wide variety of different types of bands. This community activity
was sponsored by local businesses and was held at a local historical site.
Annual Cultural Festivals- All of our state, there are local fairs and festivals that are held
annually. One of our favorites is the Dublin Irish Festival. This festival has a little bit of
everything: cultural experience, food, music and art.
Sounds of Summer Concerts Series- Our park’s system has a wonderful program where
it hosts a variety of different styles of concerts in the parks. I have been able to hear
reggae, blues, country, high school bands and the symphony through this venue. Just
bring a lawn chair and/or blanket, dinner and a lot of bug spray.
Library Lobby Concerts- Several times a year, our local library host small musical groups to play
in their lobby. This music is usually classical or acoustic in nature.
4th Friday Events- Every 4th Friday during the summer months, our city closes down the main
street and hosts a huge block party. Complete with food trucks, booths w/ a variety of different
giveaways and music in the main closed off parking lot. Although it is normally a dj and not a band,
they have had bands play too.
School Concerts- Check out your local school’s for their concert series. There are normally 3-4
concerts per year and only cost a little money. It is wonderful to support your local school’s musical
program.
Do you have any other ideas on how to experience the music scene for little to no money?
