Watching TV on a Budget
Watching TV on a Budget
When we cut our cable we were paying $200 per month, just for the cable. This was on top of paying for internet and phone. This expense was just too much, so we cut our cable and phone (landline) years ago and have never looked back.
We already had Amazon Prime, so we already had Amazon Video. We discovered that we had a great resource that we were not tapping into. Amazon Video has older TV shows and a variety of movies that you can see for free. In addition, for a small fee, you can rent current blockbusters.
Since we gave up cable at the beginning of the new year, we took advantage of Black Friday sales and picked up an antenna. This was a great investment, as we were getting regular TV at no additional cost. It gave us the daily news and new shows on the major television networks.
Finally, we signed up for Sling TV so my husband could stream his favorite shows at times that he was able to see them. It started out at $25.00 per month but has since gone up. In addition, to seeing shows when they air, we can record and then view them at our convenience, or stream them from their library.
Another one of our Christmas purchases the first year was a Roku Box on Black Friday. Roku provided us with a variety of discontinued TV shows, documentaries, and older movies. In addition, we discovered various other free streaming services such as Tubi, Freevee, Vudu, and NBC- free service. Not to mention the wide influence of Youtube.
Our local library has much more than books. There are a variety of DVDs that you can borrow and watch at home. We have borrowed TV series, movies, documentaries and so much more. This free resource is a jewel in any town.
The small act of canceling our cable services has saved us about $1800.00 per year. I hope you have already cut it too and have gained some ideas on what else you could do to enjoy what you have, but the entertainment doesn’t stop there. There are many free things you can do in your area for entertainment, so take some time to look.
How to you watch TV on a budget?
