The Frugal Five: #44

 The Frugal Five: #44

With inflation on the rise and our salaries not being able to keep up, it seems like we have taken a pay cut and must be more careful with our money.   The Frugal Five is a series where we celebrate the daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.

With the New Year upon us, it is time to set goals for how we will be spending our money.    This can look like shopping carefully, DIY projects, wasting less or just doing without.     Let’s see how we can save our pennies this year.

1- Grocery Store Clearance Section

This week in the grocery store clearance section, I scored 4 boxes of Kodiak protein granola bars for just $0.50 each.    The boxes were marked down to $1.50 each, but since they were included on the buy 5 save $5.00, I was able to pick them up for just $0.50.    My son is loving this score.

2- Accepting Opportunity

I am still eligible to take my certification course work for free.   So for at least three courses, I need to travel back to my old town, but this is a reasonable expense given the value of the course.   I am still chasing my dreams and working towards completing my certification level.

3- Staying Organized

This week is a little busy given that I need to travel for a course, my son has his awards ceremony and we all have either school or work this week.    This is the final push toward our spring break.     So staying organized and planning for our week is critical if we want to maintain our budget.

I am preparing dinners in advance this week and we will be eating leftovers.    In addition, for my travel day, I am planning my breakfast, lunch and snacks.    I will be taking all of my food and course materials, so there will not be an additional expense.    For my son’s pot luck dinner, we will be contributing an item, but no other expense is necessary.      Our dinners for the later part of the week are simple and quick to get on the table.

4- Drug Store Deals

I have some ECB to utilize this week and Walgreens has several freebies available this week.    Given our busy week, I planned to take advantage of these deals on Monday, so that we would not miss out.

5-  Staycation on the horizon

Next week is our spring break from school, so instead of traveling for a vacation, we decided to remain at home and get some home improvement work done.   In addition, we will be cooking special meals with expensive ingredients but overall it will be cheaper than eating out.     In addition, we will take a little time to explore our new town.

Since March has 4 weeks, our monthly budget is $757.20.   We elevate our dining experiences by including fresh fruits, vegetables, and higher-quality meats.  Since we have health concerns and are active individuals, we limit our processed food choices.    Grocery Shopping Tip:     Utilize your grocery store’s loyalty program. This month, my 2 primary grocery stores have provided me with store coupons for bread, Silk milk, jelly candy, frozen vegetables, and Bali coconut water.  Here is what we did this week to make our week easier: ...
