Breakfast On A Budget

 Breakfast On A Budget

USDA Website has a range of $21.20- $71.30 per week ($3.03 - $10.19 per day) per person.   The two factors that determine the amount allocated are age and sex.  With such a small amount of money allocated each day for food and my attempt to eat healthy, I need to carefully plan each week.

Breakfast is a great place to really add value to your meal planning.    It can be a cheap or an expensive meal.    The choice is yours.

All prices below are from Kroger as of February 12, 2023.

Beagle and Cream Cheese ($0. 62 per serving)

Bagels (6ct)- $2.19

Single Serving: $0.37

Cream Cheese (8oz)- $1.99

Single Serving (1 oz): $0.25

*PRO TIP-

  • Shop at Aldi’s if you have one in the area.  Their prices are consistently cheaper for these items.

  • If you don’t have an Aldi’s in your area, check out the day-old bread section of your bakery.

Egg Burrito ($0.84 per serving)

Fajita Tortilla (10 ct)- $1.99

Single Serving: $0.20

Eggs (12 ct)- $3.99

Single Serving: $0.33

Cheddar Cheese (8 oz or 2 cups)- $2.49

Single Serving (2 Tablespoons)- $0.31

Cereal and Milk ($.69 per serving)

*10.8 oz of Cereal (8 Servings)- is about $4.00

Single Serving: $.50

Milk (Gallon)- $2.99

Single Serving (1 cup)- $0.19

*PRO TIP- I can find name brand cereals for about $1.00 on a regular basis by using sales, coupons, and IBOTTA.

Hard Boiled Eggs and Banana ($0.63 per serving)

Eggs (12 ct)- $3.99

Single Serving: $0.33

Banana (estimated price)- $0.30

Oatmeal ($0.26 per serving)

Oatmeal (42 oz/30 servings)- $4.29

Single Serving (½ cup dry)- $0.14

Peanut Butter (16 oz)- $1.79

Single Serving (1 oz)- $0.12

*PRO TIP- I find Oatmeal goes on sale a few times per year.   I usually pick up oatmeal at this time and pair it with coupons and/or rebate app options.

Yogurt Cup and Apple/Banana ($1.55)

Yogurt Cup- $0.60

Apple (estimated price)- $0.95

* PRO TIP- Single serve yogurt goes on sale frequently and if you purchase a bag of apples, the price per apple goes down.

FINAL PRO TIP- Watch your sales and select your grocery store carefully.   I find that many staple items are consistently cheaper at Aldi, but if there is a great sale on the name brand items at Kroger you are able to pick them up for less than Aldi when you pair the Kroger sale with coupons and rebate apps.

Keeping Cool Without an AC- Part 5

The news is full of headlines indicating that energy shortages are on the horizon for most of the world. Over the decades, we have become reliant on the coolness of our air conditioners and have forgotten how we survived without them. It is now time to rediscover how to stay cool without our AC. Our 5 part series provides ideas on how to beat the heat this summer without the AC.     House Adjustments- Part 2 By placing house plants, such as English ivy, ficus, and spider plants, throughout your home, you can drop the overall temperature of your house by 10 degrees. In addition, house plants are air purifiers and add oxygen to your home.     For quick relief, create a personal mister to help drop the temperature of your skin: thus making you feel colder. Some people combine a spray bottle and a fan to create a cooling effect. However, I use just the spray bottle with cold water throughout the day and it keeps me cool. In addition, we use coo...

Frugal 5: #26

The Frugal Five: #26 With inflation on the rise and our salaries not being able to keep up, it seems like we have taken a pay cut and must be more careful with our money.   The Frugal Five is a series where we celebrate our daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.     ** Sorry for the lack of pictures. My week has been really busy and I just didn't get around to it. 1- Fall Garden Harvest    With the weather turning cold, we harvested the tomatoes that were left and made dice tomatoes out of them.   This will come in handy for making our taco soup and chili in the upcoming weeks.   In addition, we are able to add a few jalapeno peppers to the dishes.  Our dried mint was placed in containers for making tea this winter and fresh clippings were added to the drying rack.     Finally, our seeds are dried and ready for storage for next season.      It was a lot of work but worth it....

Frugal Five: #73

The Frugal Five: #73 With inflation on the rise and salaries not increasing, our ability to make ends meet keeps going down.    Therefore, we must be more careful with our money.   The Frugal Five is a series where we celebrate the daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.     1- “Potluck” lunch At work this week, we are having a potluck appetizer/dessert party for a colleague’s 60th birthday.  Everyone is expected to bring an appetizer or dessert for the party.    Since there will be a lot of food provided by everyone, I am not bringing my lunch that day and will eat from whatever people have brought.   In addition, on Friday, our social committee is providing us with a turkey lunch feast.     2- Picking up a Cheap Turkey This week at Kroger, if you spend $25.00, then you can purchase a Kroger turkey for just $0.49 per pound.  Although we do not prefer dark meat, we decided to take ...
