I was introduced to bow-making many years ago from a good friend when we were both a little strapped for cash at holiday time. We were looking for some great deals at a crafting store and they had a sale on a bow-making kit and ribbon. For the price of 1 really nice bow, I took a chance and picked up the bow maker, ribbon, and florist wire. Since we already had snipping tools, we were all set to make bows. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the bows turned out and the number of bows 1 roll of ribbon made.
Let’s check out how to make the magic happen.
Step 1- Place ribbon with right side facing up to start to create the tail of the ribbon. When you get to the dowels, make a half-twist.
Step 2- When the ribbon reaches the length of the first loop, then fold the ribbon back on itself and return to the dowels.
Step 3- Make a half-twist and continue to the length of the first loop on the other side of the bow.
Step 4- Repeat steps 1-3 until you have enough loops for your desired bow. I make 2 loops per length at 8,6,4 and finish with 1 loop at 2 inches.
Step 5- Wrap a floral wire around the center of the bow and twist in the back of the bow. Make sure that you leave a length of wire on the back so you can attach the bow to a wreath, lantern, or another item.
Step 6- Fluff Bow.
Money Comparisons and Tips:
As of December 7, 2021, the prices are as follows:
Walmart
$7.99 $12.95
Michaels
Regular Price $14.99; Sale Price: $8.99
Regular Price $14.99; Sale Price: $8.99
NOTE: The price is the same for the larger bow that I made in the above stores.
Cash Tip:
Wait until after Christmas and shop during the After Christmas Sales. I can usually get large spools of ribbon for between 70 and 90% off. This would bring the cost of the spool of ribbon down to between $4.60 and $1.50.
No Bow Maker- No Problem. The bow maker is just a piece of wood with 2 dowels/nails in the center to hold the ribbon.
Give it a try and let me know how it works out for you.
