Our weather has been cold, warm, cold and now finally warm again. Since it is the end of May, we believe that the evening frosts are finished so we can plant our outdoor garden.
Surprise
A few tomatoes are already growing in the ground. It seems that we had a few seeds from last year germinate in the ground and produce a few hearty plants. I am thinking that they will be cherry tomatoes, but we will see as they grow up.
Experimenting with the Tomatoes
The boys have turned the soil and freshened it up. Our plants now have a good foundation for their root systems. This year we decided to decrease the number of tomatoes in the side bed so they can have more space to grow and good air circulation. Our first year, we only planted four tomatoes and it was our best yield. We are hoping that this will happen again this year. In addition, we placed a well around each plant to encourage water to remain close to the plant. Come back and see if our experiment is successful.
Peppers Galore
Our peppers like it hot and dry, so we kept them in the general location as we had them last year. It seems that each year we get a bumper crop of peppers. However, this year we are planting jalapenos, serranos, green, banana and poblano peppers. I think our hot sauce will be fabulous this year.
Bunny Patch
Oops- I mean Strawberry Patch
Our strawberries came back again this year, so the rabbits, chipmunks, etc. will have plenty of food. Unfortunately, we normally do not get any strawberries for ourselves. Our first strawberry of the season is starting to ripen and I am watching it carefully. Hopefully I will get to it before the other critters in our year.
Container Garden
We moved our container garden outside this year. Since this is the second year and the plants are looking like they will not last through this summer, we placed them outside. I will be starting a new kitchen container garden by our kitchen windows in hope to extend some herbs and lettuces throughout the summer and fall. We will hopefully be able to harvest enough herbs and tea leaves to keep us stocked up for next winter.
It doesn’t matter how much space you have, growing a plant or two will not only produce some food for you but provide you with stress relief.
