Fruit by the serving: Pineapple ($.06-$.19)

Fruit by the serving: Pineapple ($.06-$.19)

Fruit by the serving is a concept that I first read about on Pennies & Pancakes several years ago.
The concept is basically how much does each serving of fruit cost you. Apples or bananas may be
cheaper that a larger fruit such as cantaloupe or pineapples, but if you pick one up when it is on sale
and cut it yourself, it may actually be cheaper per serving that the apple or banana.   In addition, it
will give you a wider variety of food. Furthermore, if you have children who would not eat an entire
banana or apple, it may be beneficial to purchase the smaller sized fruit.

Pineapple Selection:
A lot of pineapples we see in the states are mainly green.  When you find a pineapple with a golden
color to the majority of it, there is a good sign that the pineapple will be sweet and delicious.  As with all fruit, check for busing. If a piece of fruit is bruised in the transportation process then there is a good chance that the bruised area will not be edible.  Check to see if the fruit is heavy for its size. This is important because that means the the fruit is hydrated and will be juicier. Finally, when selecting a piece of fruit that is priced by the quantity and not the pound, then pick the biggest fruit that is of high quality.

Cutting a Pineapple:

You will need a knife, cutting board, trash can and pineapple.

First cut off the top and bottom of the fruit.

Next pare the fruit and expose the flesh of the pineapple.  Discard the outer skin.

Cut the pineapple in quarters and then cut the core out.

Finally cut the pineapple into pieces, place in containers and enjoy.

Cost Analysis:

With this pineapple, I was able to get 8 cups worth of fruit.  With a portion being 1 cup of fruit, that
comes to 8 servings. I have seen pineapples being priced for $.50 to $1.50 each.  That would bring
the price range per serving to $.06 - $.19. I can usually get apples at $.50 each for small ones, so
this would be a savings of $.44 - $.31.  WOW- It’s amazing how a little knowledge and skill will save
you so much money.

NOTE- If you get tired of eating pineapple, then you can freeze it and have it in pineapple whip or
smoothies.  Both are a delicious treat.

My week has been really busy and I just didn't get around to it. 1- Fall Garden Harvest    With the weather turning cold, we harvested the tomatoes that were left and made dice tomatoes out of them.   This will come in handy for making our taco soup and chili in the upcoming weeks.   In addition, we are able to add a few jalapeno peppers to the dishes.  Our dried mint was placed in containers for making tea this winter and fresh clippings were added to the drying rack.     Finally, our seeds are dried and ready for storage for next season.      It was a lot of work but worth it....
