January Sale Cycles
There are the cycles in the weather, economy, politics and the general fabrics of
life, but the cycle that I am focused on recently is the sale cycles that seem to be
predictable and constant. However, caution is best served here because
overspending can easily occur in the name of saving money. Since knowledge
is power, here are a few tricks and skills to help you make an informed
decision on your cycles. This month we will focus on the January Sales Cycles
and give a few general tricks in order to make the most of your budget.
January tends to be focused on getting healthy, New Year’s Resolutions, colds,
and after holiday sales.
Here are some of the things I look for in January:
Cold MedicinePain Relievers
Vitamins
Cough Drops
Soup
Oats/Quaker Products (National Oatmeal Month)
Jello
Healthy foods (Healthy Choice, South Beach)
New product lines (Hair Color, Beauty Products)
Super Bowl Sales (Chips, Dips, Crackers, Snacks,Soda)
White Sales (Linens, Towels)
Tissues
Cleaning Products
Clearance Items (Holiday decor, Candles, Winter Clothing, Hats, Gloves, Boots)
In addition to shopping the sales, it is also good to know what fruits and
vegetables are in seasons because they taste the best and are sold at their
lowest price of the year.
Seasonal Fruit
Pears (Anjou, Bosc)Grapefruit
Hass Avocados
Kiwis
Lemons
Oranges (Navel, Blood, Clementines)
Seasonal Vegetables

Year Round Tips and Tricks
Tip 1- Start a Price Book. This is a simple tracking system used to look at the
prices of the most common and expensive items you purchase and see the
frequency and lowest price of each item. I have made a simple Google
document to track the prices. If you would like a copy, leave a comment below.
If you are just starting a Price Book, I would suggest starting with meat items.
For example, in my area, chicken goes on sale for $1.49 per pound every 4-6
weeks. Therefore, I purchase enough for 4 weeks and wait until the next sale
cycle. If I purchase 5 pounds per month, I will save $2.50 per month or $30.00
per year.
