Hygge 101

Hygge 101

Denmark was named the “happiest place in the world”, and they credit their practice of
Hygge for this.

So, what is Hygge?  Hygge is defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable
cheerfulness that causes a feeling of contentment or well-being.”   I believe that Hygge is
living a simpler lifestyle that is filled with contentment and rich relationships, but how do we
get started?

When you look into ways to bring Hygge into your life, it can get overwhelming and that is
not what Hygge is all about.  Here are 5 of the basic principles of how to bring Hygge into
your life, but how you implement them is entirely up to you.

Bask in light

Natural light is beautiful and has a healing nature, so changing your lighting from harsh
to soft options, or open up your window areas.  A fire in the fireplace or a simple candle burning can create a warm and cozy feeling in your room at a very reasonable price.

Embrace Coziness

It doesn’t matter how big or small your space is, make it a cozy sanctuary- add pillows, soft
blankets, etc.   My cat loves curling up on her blanket by the window with the natural light
streaming in during the day.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring- It doesn’t matter.  Dress for the weather and get outside.
Enjoy what the Earth has to offer in each season.

Savor Warm food and beverages

Nothing beats a hot bowl of soup or sipping a warm cup of coffee.  Treat yourself to this
experience on a regular basis.

Strengthen Relationships

The sweet life is not about the places we live or the things we have, but the relationships we
build and cherish.  Loving, laughing and just being together helps to strengthen any
relationship.

The Frugal Five: #88

The Frugal Five: #88 With inflation on the rise and salaries not increasing, our ability to make ends meet keeps going down.    Therefore, we must be more careful with our money.   The Frugal Five is a series where we celebrate the daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.     This week I am exploring how to keep costs down during busy weeks.    Keeping dinner on the table instead of eating out is one of my strategies to get the job done.    Here are some of my tips and trips.    1- Free-Bee Pick Up  Over the last month, we have been blessed with several Free-Bees.  First, a friend gave us a dozen eggs from his chickens.  In addition, we picked up several photos with discount codes from Walgreens and CVS.   Next, we used our local grocery store coupons for several free food items such as seltzer water, ice cream, etc.   Then, we picked up toothpaste and eyeliners from ...
