Frugal Five: #121

With inflation on the rise and salaries not increasing, our ability to make ends meet is decreasing. Therefore, we must be more careful with our money. The Frugal Five is a series that celebrates the daily or weekly activities that help us live a frugal life.

I am exploring ways to reduce costs during busy weeks. One strategy is to watch the pennies because they add up. Here are some of my tips and tricks.

1- Yogurt Making

By writing down and tracking your pantry items, you can maintain a consistent grocery rotation and utilize the food you have already purchased.   Each month, I create a list of pantry items that are approaching expiration and make an effort to incorporate them into our menu planning.

2- Our Rich Backyard - Fall Leaves

The trees are finally displaying their beautiful leaves, turning our backyard into a colorful backdrop.     It is time to prepare the firepit area and get ready for evening fires, roasting marshmallows, and family fun.

3-  Using all the parts of the Turkey Breast

Last week, we made turkey lunch meat from cooking a turkey breast and slicing it thin on our meat slicer.   However, we didn’t want to waste any part of our turkey, so we used the carcass to make bone broth.   Then we turn the liquid deliciousness into turkey soup for lunches.

4- Final Tomato Canning Session

I took all of the tomatoes from the freezer, refrigerator, and garden to process into canned tomatoes.  This process took several days, but we were able to get the tomatoes on the shelf for winter.      Job well done!

5-  Take Advantage of Free Items

October provided us with some wonderful free-bees.    The grocery stores were generous with ice cream, a bakery cinnamon roll, a can of tuna, cheese snack kits, and tissues.   In addition, I was able to pick up some beauty items (emery boards, eye shadow, and razors) from CVS for free.     The haul wasn’t large, but the items were higher-end and appreciated.

What Free-bees have you been able to pick up this year?   The  2024 Free-Bee Summary has been posted.    If you missed it, then click on the link below.   The new Free-bee List will be coming this Wednesday.

Here is my list:

Since March has 4 weeks, our monthly budget is $757.20.   We elevate our dining experiences by including fresh fruits, vegetables, and higher-quality meats.  Since we have health concerns and are active individuals, we limit our processed food choices.    Grocery Shopping Tip:     Utilize your grocery store’s loyalty program. This month, my 2 primary grocery stores have provided me with store coupons for bread, Silk milk, jelly candy, frozen vegetables, and Bali coconut water.  Here is what we did this week to make our week easier: ...
